Painter and Textile Artist
Sarah Green

Check out the new paintings...

I am a painter and textile artist currently living in the south west of Scotland and a regular visitor to the Western Isles. Harris and Lewis provide me with my main source of inspiration. I feel a strong connection with the spirit of the place and I am drawn to stone and lichen, heather, machair and the sea. I am moved by the daily changes that manifest according to the weather or the season, particularly the colours and textures.

I work in mixed media, using natural fibres as much as possible. My wall hangings are a mixture of needle felting, hand embroidery, silk ribbon and beads on a backdrop of Harris tweed. Sometimes I incorporate found objects, natural shell beads or shells.

I try to recreate a little of the magic and mystery of the Scottish landscape. All of my pieces are hand stitched and hand finished as I am keen to retain some of the skills that I like to think I have inherited from my namesake – my grandmother.

I also use texture in my paintings, working mainly in acrylic, building up layers and working with a variety of tools

I am also inspired to write poems about the nature of my surroundings.I hope that my poems, textiles and paintings encourage people to take a closer look at their environment and to connect with the magical shapes, patterns and textures.

Biography

At school, I loved Art. However, distracted by the excitement of other cultures, I studied Spanish, Italian and French and then did a degree in English and French, living in France for a year. I have lived in England, Wales and Scotland working as a teacher and in management positions. I have been painting for several years, but a trip to Harris and the acquisition of some tweed inspired me to explore the use of textiles. I am currently studying for my HNC in Art and Design.
